Make Your Resolutions Work
GROUND ZERO by Jeremy Boyd

New Years' resolutions. They're really a great thing. Few of us take the time during the rest of the year to sit down and make a blueprint of what we hope to accomplish in the months to come. It is only when the year turns that many of us reflect back on what we have achieved to date and what we strive to do in the future.

Here is a list of things to think about when you make your New Years' resolutions (and this doesn't have to be done only on December 31st - you can, and should, regularly put your goals and dreams down on paper so that you can refer back to them when you need to):

  • Decide where you want to go long term. What do you want your job to be in the future? Are you happy where you are? Do you want to eventually be the boss? What is your idea of a "perfect physique"? Do you see pictures in magazines and wish that you looked that way? Long term goals are great to establish in order to give yourself 'purpose'. Just keep in mind that these are long term goals and will not be attained overnight.

  • Recognize that you do have the power to achieve your ultimate goals. Without the vision it takes to imagine yourself in that perfect job or with that perfect physique, you will probably never make it. People who say, "I could never look like that" are the ones who have given up and already sabotaged any chance they may have had to better themselves.

  • Identify the obstacles that may stand in your way. This will help you in developing short terms goals. List the ones that you have the power to change and those that you do not. Focus on those that you have command over and set the others aside until you either gain the ability to change them or until they become inconsequential.

  • Make a series of short-term goals for the near future. You will not reach your ultimate goals by trying to leap an entire staircase all at once - you must go one step at a time. If your long-term goal is to lose 20 pounds, for example, you may want your first short-term goal to be to eliminate high glycemic carbohydrates from your diet. After each successful step make a new short-term goal and slowly forge ahead.

  • Be prepared to fail. Nothing worth doing is without the risk of failure. Learn from your mistakes and instead of viewing them as a personal defeat, view them as a learning experience that will make you stronger in the long term. If you cheat on your diet don't give up altogether - get your diet back on track and start where you left off. It's true that your biggest obstacle can often be yourself and your own perceived limitations. "When given the permission to fail, you have the freedom to succeed."

  • Have a sense of humor. You should be able to take your successes and failures in stride. You will make reaching your objective much more difficult by constantly stressing over it. That is not to say that you shouldn't take it seriously, but is to say to remember to keep a certain degree of 'balance' in your life (read my previous article Goin' for the Gold).
  • By identifying your final goal, identifying your obstacles and making short term goals to overcome them, keeping your wits about you and allowing yourself to fail, you will be well on your way to achieving your ultimate dreams and aspirations.
